Bee All That You Can Bee at the Adult Spelling Bee

I can’t spell the word occasionally. I misspell it pretty much every time I type it, including when I just typed it in the previous sentence. I know it has either two Cs or two Ss, but I incredibly guess wrong about 90% of the time and put in a single C and superfluous S (please note that I had no trouble spelling the ostensibly more difficult word superfluous). Luckily, most of the time when I’m typing it, I’m using either Word, Outlook, or my phone, all of which will either point out my mistake or outright correct it for me.

There are, of course, plenty of people out there who can spell occasionally and a boatload of other, legitimately challenging words without the safety net of technological spell checking. These wizards of words are exactly who we’re after for our upcoming Adult Spelling Bee on Monday, February 12 at 6:30 PM. Here are the deets:

  • It’s free.
  • It’s for adults (18+)
  • Rather than competing as individuals, participants will compete in teams of 2 – 5 members and collaborate to come up with answers, so it’s less stressful than a traditional bee.
  • It’s a points-based competition rather than the usual “spell it wrong and you’re out” format, so you don’t have to worry about exiting in shame after a single slip-up.
  • There are multiple rounds (six, to be exact), including a literature-themed round. Each round consists of 5 – 10 words, and teams are awarded points for each word they spell correctly. After rounds three and five, the lowest scoring teams are eliminated until two teams are left to compete in the championship round.
  • You probably don’t need me to tell you, but no dictionaries, smart phones, secret hand signals, or other aids are allowed (duh).
  • There are prizes for the winners, and all teams get small participation favors!
  • The winning team will advance to compete against winning teams from other area libraries in a battle for regional spelling supremacy! The big event will be held later in spring 2018 (more details to come).

If our brand of competitive spelling sounds like the type of beeswax you’d like to be in, assemble a squad of your biggest vocabularied friends, family, and ringers and fill out a registration form by February 5. You can view and print the form here, or pick one up at the library. If you’d like to participate but don’t have people with whom to team up, fill out this form, and we’ll group you with others who are seeking teammates. For more details, post in the comments, send us an e-mail, or call us at 817-249-6632.
