Volunteering

Benbrook Library depends on volunteers to extend our ability to deliver services to patrons and to strengthen our relationships within the community.

Want to volunteer with us? Fill out the volunteer application!

We currently require all volunteers to have a profile/application filled out on the Better Impact website. This is so that we can make sure to have accurate reporting for our volunteer hours.

FAQs about Volunteering

We accept volunteers 12 yrs of age and older.

Any volunteer under the age of 18 yrs must have a signed permission form on file before their first volunteer shift.

You can find the teen permission permission form here

We require a background check to be ran on all volunteers aged 18 yrs and up. This allows us to add an extra measure of safety and peace of mind for our patrons, staff, and other volunteers. The process is confidential and at no cost to the volunteer(s).

Information required for the background check:

  • Social Security Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Address
  • Email
  • Phone Number
  • First/Last Name

Dress appropriately for the environment/task(s):

  • No controversial or inappropriate words/graphics on clothing

  • No undergarments showing

  • Wear appropriate & comfortable shoes

We just ask that you keep in mind that we are a family and community centered environment, and that some volunteer work may be more physical than others!

We do our best to accomodate people of varying skill and comfort levels, so please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

We do try to accommodate any parents that wish to hang out at the library while their child volunteers, but since we are limited on space we just ask for understanding from the parents if they need to relocate in order to accommodate patrons.

However, if parents would like to get in their own volunteer time alongside their child, we can do that too! Parents would just need to follow the volunteer application process themselves and complete a background check before volunteering.

Unfortunately at this time we do not partner with volunteers for the sole purpose of fulfilling service hours for the court system.

The library has a default hours verification sheet here.

We can also fill out any form provided by you, and we can also verify via the electronic systems with various schools.

Please notify the volunteer coordinator if you are going to need a verification sheet printed for you.

2024 Summer Reading: Teen Volunteering

Adventure awaits, will you answer the call?

Get ready for a summer of adventure at Benbrook Public Library! Summer Reading kicks off on June 1st and runs through August 3rd.

We rely exclusively on teen volunteers to run the registration and prize table for the summer reading program. This is a good opportunity for teens to gain a large chunk of volunteer hours over the course of the summer.

By providing teens a structured program to operate within, we hope to help them learn and expand various skills like schedule responsibility, attendance/timeliness, teamwork, customer service interactions, record-keeping, problem-solving, organization, etc.

Summer Reading Volunteer Orientation

All volunteers will need to attend one of the orientation dates in order to learn the rules of the programs. For anyone starting later in the summer, training will be scheduled individually before the first volunteer shift.

RSVP for a Summer Reading Volunteer Orientation here. Orientation A will be from 6:30pm - 7:30pm on Wednesday 5/22. Orientation B will be from 3pm - 4pm on Saturday 5/25.

Volunteer Shifts

Shifts are set in 2 hr blocks, and you can work as many shifts a day as you would like. There will be two volunteers at the table for each shift.

Sign up for your summer volunteer shifts here on SignUpGenius. The schedule is open from June 1st to August 3rd and you can schedule as far ahead as you would like.

FAQs for Summer Teen Volunteers

Yes! You can access the 2024 Summer Reading Teen Volunteer packet here.

It includes a contact information form for both the volunteer & parent/guardian, and two forms to be read and signed by the volunteer & parent/guardian.

This is different from our standard teen permission form since it applies specifically to rules for volunteering at the summer reading prize table.

Yes! You can schedule volunteer shifts with your siblings or your friends.

Please keep in mind that there are 2 volunteers per shift, so if you are volunteering with someone you will both need to sign up separately for the shift.

Siblings and friends may NOT hang out at the table with you during your shift unless they are also volunteering. This is due to space constraints and heavy traffic flow.

We only accept volunteers ages 12+years for this program. The goal is to start to foster independent work skills, so we do not allow parents/family to hang out around the area due to space constraints and heavy traffic flow.

If your family member(s) want to stay at the library, they are welcome to take advantage of all other spaces and activities going on. Or they can register to do their own volunteering!

The goal is to be able to attend all shifts that you register for. That said, life happens! We ask that you let us know at least 2 hours before your shift so that we can arrange a backup plan.

If you are running late, you can call the library to let a staff member know.

Please note that if you no call/no show for a shift more than twice, you risk being removed from the summer volunteer program. We rely exclusively on the teens to man this program, so when people are late or don't show up, we don't always have the staff coverage to manage.

If you and another volunteer agree to switch shifts, just let Bridgett know so she can notate it.

Yes, you can still volunteer.

The children and teen reading games can be easily taught during the first volunteer shift at the prize table.

For the adult game, we have provided a video training since the rules are more in-depth. You can find that training video here.
